Fear Setting

Fear Setting

Sometimes the best way to overcome a fear is to face it. With fear setting you conquer your mind and feelings by dissecting the fear and everything attached to it. Fear setting is thinking critically about your worries, outlining all the worst-case scenarios and then finding the solutions for each outcome. If you can outline all the possible scenarios that can occur, you can be prepared for anything. Every problem has a solution just as every fear can be conquered. Use this fear setting guide to help you identify and face what scares you. Define and reframe your fear and learn to thrive and face your worries. Follow these 8 steps to guide your thinking and conquer your fear.

1) Name and Identify the Fear

I am afraid of public speaking. I have to give a presentation at work.

2) Identify your physical and emotional responses.

My neck goes red, my throat feels tight, my heart beats faster. I begin to sweat. I feel anxious and worried that I won’t say the right thing. I feel embarrassed and wonder why other people can be so confident.

3) Possible Outcomes

1) I could get up there and forget my ideas.

2) I will look inferior to my colleagues and make a fool of myself.

3) My laptop could quit.

4) I could sweat.

5) My voice could shake.

4) Possible Solutions

1) I’ll use cue cards with key words to help guide my thinking.

2) I will wear a necklace that reminds me of my strength.

3) I will ensure my laptop is charged, I’ll bring my charger and I’ll test that everything is working before I begin. If all else fails I will use the white board to show my ideas.

4) I’ll wear an outfit that is cooling and is dark in colour, so my sweat won’t be visible if it happens.

5) If my voice starts to shake, I will take a deep breath to calm myself. I will slow down.

5) Limiting Belief

I don’t feel good enough. I lack confidence.

6) Reframe the Belief

I am very good at my job. I can be clear in my thinking and my words. The more I practice public speaking the easier it will become.

7) Create a mantra for yourself

I am an excellent public speaker and I have confidence in my abilities to share my amazing ideas with others.

8) Describe your success as though it’s happening right now

I am dressed for success. I feel confident while speaking because I am prepared. My words are well received, and I will feel calm and collected. My voice is steady and strong.
